Follweiler Periodontal is the only dentist/periodontist office on

of periodontal disease and further 75% of all adult tooth loss
is due to periodontal disease.
Periodontal or gum disease is a type of chronic infection that
affects the gum tissue and supporting bone structures in
the mouth. The earliest stages of periodontal disease often
produces few noticeable symptoms. Periodontal disease
develops when a sticky film called plaque hardens and
becomes calculus or tartar. Unchecked this causes gingivitis
which progresses to periodontitis, a much more serious form
of the disease. Frequently, the first signs are bad breath that
has a sulphur like smell, red, swollen or sore gum tissue,
loose teeth or a change in the way the teeth fit together.

probing. These diagnostic tools will enable us to verify if gum
disease is present and determine your treatment options.
As a periodontist Doctor Follweiler is fortunate to offer Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure or LANAP therapy to our
patients. This dental procedure eliminates the infection at its’ starting point, the periodontal pocket. The deep gum pockets
that form around the teeth are a perfect place for bacteria to grow creating pus and infection. This is where the LANAP
periodontal laser treatment outshines all other lasers. The MILLENNIUM PERIOLASE laser TM is one of a kind and may be
changing the way in which periodontists treat their patients. With a hair like beam of light and without the use of a scalpel
(blade) or sutures (stitches) this specialized laser is able to remove the bacteria and infection in the periodontal pocket.
Not only does it vaporize the bacteria it does not remove tissue the way the other lasers did thus reducing post operative
bleeding, sensitivity and discomfort. The MOST exciting part of the entire LANAP procedure is that this particular laser
stimulates the re-growth of bone and 90% of treated patients are disease free after five years following laser treatment.
Recent studies have shown that people with periodontal disease are 2.7 times more likely to suffer a heart attack and 3
times more likely to suffer a stroke. Women with periodontal disease are 7-8 times more likely to give birth to premature
or low birth weight babies. Periodontal infection can raise blood sugar levels in diabetics causing difficulty in insulin control.
Periodontal infection in the mouth may be inhaled and worsen respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis and
emphysema. Finally, researchers studying DNA have found that periodontal disease can be spread from spouse to spouse
and parent to child.

pocket reduction protocol that works. While traditional periodontal surgery has in no way become obsolete The LANAP

This “star wars” like laser is the first F.D.A. (Federal Food and Drug Administration) cleared laser technique to demonstrate
new tissue and bone growth.
